Wild Terrier Orchestra feat. The Witches of Westend - "Solid Air, Liminal Bones (Lazar Incantation)", 22 min 40 sec, The Balkans, 2024
In paleontology, the Lazarus Effect (Lazarus taxon) describes organisms that disappear from the fossil record for a period or more, only to reappear later. It refers to species or populations that were once thought to be extinct but are later rediscovered. Paul Wignall and Michael Benton defined Lazarus taxa as those that, during times of biotic crisis, seemingly go extinct but only temporarily disappear from the fossil record, often for millions of years, before reappearing unchanged.
“Solid Air, Liminal Bones (Lazar Incantation)” transforms two fragments from traditional Bulgarian women’s choir pieces (Zhalba za Lazar and Moma Houbava) into a deconstructed hymn for the disappeared species in the ongoing biodiversity crisis. The call for Lazar to rise from the dead becomes a mystical continuum, a mantra that disrupts time structures and opens a gate through which extinct taxa can reappear.

The Witches of Westend is a women’s feminist choir, founded in 2013 by Pola Dobler in Munich. While their repertoire is often political and rebellious, it can be beautiful and mystical as well. The choir redesigns each performance and adapts it individually to the venue, creating unique experiences. The Witches of Westend collaborate with Wild Terrier Orchestra within FOSE’s third edition.
